Functional Addiction Treatment for Silicon Valley Workers
Functional addicts and alcoholics appear to be ok. They go to work every day and complete all projects on time. Most functional addicts are workaholics. And most are well-respected by their peers at work.
In fact, functional addiction often appears to work great. Functional addiction works for the user right up until the time it no longer works – because the user is being carried out by EMS personnel on a stretcher.
Most functional substance abusers identify no issues with their ‘performance enhancing’ activities. But the damaged hearts, livers and lungs of drug abusers will eventually have a differing opinion.
Functional Alcoholism Treatment
Functional alcoholics are ‘masters of deception’. Their alcoholic behavior is kept rigidly partitioned, usually drinking in isolation.
Functional alcoholics are typically well-educated, with stable jobs and families. They go to work each day on time and are usually well-respected in their industry. They are also alcoholics.
“A landmark study in 2007 by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism categorized alcoholics into 5 subtypes: only 9% are of the “chronic severe” subtype, fitting the stereotype of the low-bottom alcoholic. Other addiction experts estimate that between 75% and 90% of alcoholics are high-functioning.” From Psychology Today, Characteristics of High-Functioning Alcoholics
Professional – and Alcoholic
Impaired professionals are found in many professions. Any high risk, high reward and intense pressure work environment is at risk for development of high functioning alcoholics.
Professions that experience high levels of alcoholism include attorneys, doctors and medical professionals, airline pilots, and first responders.
Functional alcoholics quickly develop a very high tolerance for alcohol consumption. Even with enormous alcohol intake, functional alcoholics do not have hangovers severe enough to prevent going to work.
Many functioning alcoholics have the idea that they are ‘super human’ and can simply drink more than the average human with no negative health consequences. In the beginning, that is true. Ultimately, liver disease and other severe health issues will take their toll.
From an emotional and relationship point of view – functioning alcoholics are typical alcoholics. Unfortunately, they are unlikely to recognize their part in disintegrating personal relationships.
High Priority: Functional Alcoholics need to get treatment for their alcoholism before liver failure or career declines become an urgent issue.
