The Opioid Epidemic is Here, Now.
Bay Area Opioid Rehab for Anyone Struggling with Opioid Use
Casual or prescription opioid use can rapidly lead to addiction. At Support Systems Homes, we treat many clients struggling with addiction to opioids.
Our best advice: Do not take any opioid unless there is a medical reason. Medical reasons for opioid use include severe injuries, post-surgical pain and extreme pain from medical procedures. The problem arises when people become dependent on the opioids to “fight the pain,” taking more and more.
At Support Systems Homes’ Northern California rehab facilities in San Jose, California, we use medical detox in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies. Our clients benefit from a whole person approach in the treatment of substance use disorders.
Over 115 People in the U.S. Die Each Day from Opioid Overdose
Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. The misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl has become a national epidemic, affecting public health as well as social and economic welfare.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
- 21-29% of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them.6
- Between 8 and 12 percent develop an opioid use disorder.7–9
- An estimated 4 to 6 percent who misuse prescription opioids transition to heroin.7–9
- About 80 percent of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids.7
- Opioid overdoses increased 30 percent from July 2016 through September 2017 in 52 areas in 45 states.10
- The Midwestern region saw opioid overdoses increase 70 percent from July 2016 through September 2017.10
- Opioid overdoses in large cities increase by 54 percent in 16 states.10
Most Individuals with Opioid Addictions Don’t Receive Treatment
While the rates of opioid addiction treatment have increased more than six-fold since 1999, few individuals struggling with addiction actually receive treatment.
A 2016 Surgeon General’s Report found that only 1 in 10 people receive any treatment to manage their addiction. Of those addicted, 40% do not seek treatment. Of the 20 million Americans that had a substance abuse addiction in 2015, about 10% of them were addicted to opioids.

The Industry’s More Aware Now, But Opioid Overdose Rates CONTINUE to Rise
According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between June 2016 and September 2017, emergency room visits for suspected opioid overdoses increased 30% across the US.
CDC figures show that on average, 130 people die every day due to opioid overdoses. “It does not respect state or county lines and is still increasing in every region in the United States,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s Principal Deputy Director, said in a statement.
The CDC estimates prescription opioid misuse in the United States costs the economy $78.5 billion a year. That includes the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
